Five leaves folding left, traffic door parked right

Why aluminium is the only bifold worth fitting

A bifold door is mostly hinge and roller: each leaf hangs off the next and the whole run concertinas onto stainless steel wheels in a top or bottom track. That hardware punishes weak frames. Aluminium is rigid enough to carry a 1.2m wide, toughened double-glazed leaf on a slim profile without dropping or twisting through London's damp winters, which is why uPVC bifolds have all but disappeared from the market.

Ours are thermally broken (a polyamide barrier through the frame stops cold tracking indoors), achieve around 1.4 W/m²K double glazed, and are powder-coated in any RAL colour, with anthracite grey 7016 and jet black 9005 the runaway London favourites. A slim bifold option trims the meeting stiles to roughly 90-100mm where two leaves join, so even a closed set reads as glass, not frame.

Bifold configurations

How should your bifold fold?

Configuration is the decision that matters most and the one showrooms rush. It sets where the leaves stack, which way they swing, and whether you have a normal door for taking the bins out in January. We sketch these options against your actual opening at the free survey.

2+1 · pair plus traffic door The London favourite for a 3 panel bifold: two leaves fold left, the third works as an everyday hinged door.
3+0 · single stack All three leaves fold to one side for the cleanest full-width opening. Best where the stack can park clear of walkways.
3-3-0 · split stack Six leaves parking three to each side. Balances a wide span, keeps the stacks shallow, traffic door in the run.
Bifold door installation

From survey to first fold in 2-3 weeks

Because the frames are fabricated by our sister company Prime Fabrication, factory direct, no middleman, we control the whole chain: the surveyor who measures your opening briefs the fabricator who makes the doors and the fitter who hangs them. Nothing is lost between three different firms, and a remake, if ever needed, takes days rather than a season.

Free survey

We measure the structural opening, check the lintel and levels, and talk through configurations, thresholds and colours. Fixed quote follows in writing.

Fabrication

Profiles are cut, crimped and powder-coated to your RAL, then glazed with 28mm argon-filled toughened units. Typically 2-3 weeks.

Fitting day

Old doors out, new track levelled to the millimetre (bifolds live or die by a level track), leaves hung, adjusted and sealed. Usually one day.

FENSA sign-off

Installation is registered with FENSA, so your Building Regulations certificate and guarantee paperwork arrive without you lifting a finger.

Prime Fabrication

Your bifold is made in our own factory

Most London installers buy bifold sets from a national trade fabricator and add a margin. Ours come from Prime Fabrication, the fabrication company in our own group, so you buy factory direct with no middleman. That is why our lead times run 2-3 weeks instead of the industry's 6-8, why odd-sized openings cost no drama, and why builders and developers ask us for supply-only sets from the same line.

Questions

Bifold doors, answered

How long does bifold door installation take?
A straightforward set into an existing opening is fitted, sealed and adjusted in a day. If we are forming a new opening with a structural lintel, allow 2-3 days including making good. Every installation is FENSA certified, so Building Regulations sign-off and the certificate are handled for you.
What is the best bifold configuration for a 3 panel set?
For most London extensions we recommend 2+1: two leaves folding one way plus an independent traffic door. You get a normal door for everyday use without folding the whole run. A 3+0 stack, all three leaves folding to one side, gives the cleanest full-width opening if you have parking room for the stack.
How slim can aluminium bifold sightlines be?
Standard aluminium bifolds show around 120-135mm of frame where two leaves meet. Slim bifold systems bring that to roughly 90-100mm, and because aluminium carries big panes on thin sections, the glass still dominates. uPVC bifolds cannot get close, which is why nearly every bifold we fit is aluminium.
Are aluminium bifold doors secure?
Yes. Our sets use multi-point shootbolt locking on the traffic door and floating mullions, internally glazed beads so panes cannot be removed from outside, and toughened or laminated safety glass throughout. PAS 24 tested hardware is available where an insurer or new-build specification requires it.
What is the lead time for aluminium bifold doors in London?
Typically 2-3 weeks from survey to installation, because frames are cut, crimped and powder-coated to order in our sister factory rather than bought from a trade counter. Survey is free, the quote is fixed, and we will confirm your installation date when you order.
