Solar control, low-E or self-cleaning, which glass earns its place?
These are coatings, not marketing tiers, and they solve different problems. Roofs often combine two of them in one unit: self-cleaning outer pane, solar control inner coating.
Solar control glass
A metallic coating reflects the sun's infrared heat before it enters, cutting solar gain by half or more against plain double glazing. The fix for the conservatory nobody sits in from June to August. A slight blue or neutral tint is the visual giveaway, and it doubles as glare control.
- Solar gain (g-value)
- approx 0.25-0.4
- Best position
- Roof, south / west sides
Low-E glass
A low-emissivity coating reflects room heat back inside, with argon in the cavity slowing conduction. This is the winter half of the problem solved: a conservatory that holds its warmth into October evenings instead of dumping it through the roof by dusk.
- U-value
- approx 1.0-1.2 W/m²K
- Best position
- Everywhere, standard spec
Self-cleaning glass
A titanium dioxide outer coating uses daylight to break down organic grime, then rain sheets it away instead of drying into spots. On a roof that needs ladders and a squeegee twice a year, it pays for itself in chores, though it is a helper, not a miracle.
- How it works
- Photocatalytic + hydrophilic
- Best position
- Roof panes
What the regulations ask of a conservatory
Straight glass replacement in an existing conservatory sits outside building control, and conservatories themselves are generally exempt from Building Regulations while they stay separated from the house by external-quality doors and keep their own heating controls. What always applies is safety glazing: BS 6262 requires toughened glass in doors, beside doors and in low-level panels, and we fit it as standard rather than as an upsell. Remove the dividing doors, or swap a translucent roof for a solid one, and the room legally becomes an extension, at which point building control enters the picture. That route is covered honestly on our conservatory roof replacement page.
Timescales are short because this is glass work, not building work. Misted units are measured and replaced in about a week. A full roof reglaze is typically surveyed, manufactured and fitted within two to three weeks, with one to two days on site. A cracked pane that cannot wait, a football through the side glass on a Sunday, is handled by our 24/7 emergency glazing team, who will board or make safe the same day. And if you are reworking the whole garden elevation, our uPVC windows and doors come factory-direct from our sister company, so frames and conservatory glass can be quoted together.
